Developing Capacity in Sustainability

Years ago (1999) I wrote this paper about my teaching practice in Sustainability. I was teaching ecodesign at that time – even as I was running a project on Recycling. In my interview of a few weeks ago I mentioned the practice of being assisted by a Teaching Assistant (TA). I then remembered the template I used to used to use to plan courses – and make the course plan explicit to the TAs. I had written about this in the 1999 Ecodesign article for presentation at a conference in Japan (Download PDF ecodesign-course-development).

I imagine learning-sustainability as a journey – the transport model of education – where the class embarks upon a journey (Postman). Here each of the students has a role to make an event happen. I reserve the first part of each class for myself – to do a lecture – my hour as I refer to it. It gives me time to exercise my cords.

I am speaking with my RA about learner centered design teaching. The teacher is absent as an authority figure. The program then becomes EXPLICIT (I loved writing that word – so there Spotify) and is collectively owned.

I went and had a look at the excel file that contained the templates. I have it here for Download (Excel File courseplanner).

It contains the following:

  1. The theoretical matrix of sustainability (PDF courseplanner-theory)
  2. The Design Process (Product Design Process – PDF courseplanner-design-process)
  3. The Course as planned – Sample from 1997 (PDF courseplanner-courseplanner)
